Homestead Observations
Thoughts, observations and a few questions following Sunday's season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway: Even though Jimmie Johnson didn't have to win Sunday's race to secure his first Nextel Cup title, his team did have to deliver a nearly flawless race. It almost did. The only miscue was a loose lug nut, which forced Johnson to drive from the back of the field to the front. But by now, fans have become so accustomed to Johnson racing from the back of the field that they've come to expect it. Before building the Homestead track in the mid-'90s, original owner Ralph Sanchez claimed he wanted it to be the best track in the country. So he asked his good friend, the great Emerson Fittipaldi, which track Fittipaldi thought was the greatest and the Brazilian open wheel star replied, "the Indianapolis Motor Speedway." So Sanchez built a 1½-mile version of the Brickyard. It worked well for the Indy cars that raced there when it first opened, but not for stock cars. The track was reconfigured and the corners were rounded off, but the track still was flat. Then it was changed once more a few years ago. This present incarnation, with variable banking that...
Inside Dish: Ragan needs more seasoning
Jack Roush believes in David Ragan's ability but admits NASCAR has voiced some concerns about the driver's aptitude and the safety of other competitors. Roush says Ragan's Craftsman Truck run at Talladega and previous ARCA experience at Daytona are sufficient to qualify for the Daytona 500 field, but the company will enter the 21-year-old rookie in both the ARCA and Busch races next February in order to give him more seat time. . . . Cal Wells says he will be in the NASCAR garage in some fashion for 2007. Wells said at Homestead his sponsorship deal was signed in June, but he hasn't announced it. Can no news be good news? With Travis Kvapil's departure to Roush Racing, PPI Motorsports' future is tenuous, at best, but Wells is doing his best to find his people jobs in the interim. . . . The crew chief carousel is spinning. Peter Sospenzo joined Ginn Racing (formerly MB2 Motorsports) last month to be reunited with Joe Nemechek. The pair worked together on the No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. David Hyder has been mentioned as a candidate for Michael Waltrip Racing, and Derrick Finley will oversee Jeremy Mayfield's car at Bill Davis Racing. Jamie McMurray wanted a...
